OoChess Tutorial - Chess Magazine

In this tutorial, we'll discuss how to create a chess magazine or newsletter using Open Office Writer and the OoChess template. What we will do is recreate a partial chess magazine from an older issue of  En Passant 64, the official magazine of the Chess Federation of Canada. I am very grateful to the CFC for granting me permission to use this older issue of their fine magazine as a model for this tutorial.

As always, we begin by making the shell for our project, this time a magazine. Then we scan and rework the cover to fit a letter size page. Next, we set up special left and right footers for the pages. Finally, we add page numbers, a title, and we are ready to go.

Now that the shell is complete, we fill in all the non-game material in our magazine. We leave placeholders in the position where we want to insert each actual game. We learn how to insert a diagram directly into the magazine and how to make a simple match crosstable from scratch.

At this point, we insert a test game into the OoChess magazine and use it to test our settings. When we are satisfied, we insert the rest of the games, taking note of the few special cases that arise.

We are nearly finished with the actual magazine material. All that is left now are the few chess problems, combinations and endgame positions.

For our last steps, we insert a Game and Opening Index and then export our magazine as a PDF file so that it becomes accessible to everyone.
