Setting Up Writer To Work With OoChess

There are a few settings in Writer that should be changed if you are going to write chess documents or maintain a chess diary. Without these changes, your writing may become downright irksome.

Disable Automatic List Creation

Many paragraphs in a chess document begin with a number, specifically, a move number:

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6

Depending upon your settings, Writer may well interpret the number at the start of your paragraph as the start of a numbered list, so that when you hit the Enter key, you'll end up with something like this:
  1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6
This is clearly not good for a chess document. So you'll want to make sure that this automatic numbered list feature is disabled. To do this, click on:

Tools → Auto Correct Options → Options: Turn OFF – “Apply Numbering – Symbol: *”

Disable Capitalization of First Letter of Every Sentence

Sometimes a sentence in a chess document will begin with a pawn move without a move number before it:
e4 is usually the best move to begin a game with.

In order to prevent Writer from automatically capitalizing the first letter of each sentence, click on:

Tools → Auto Correct Options → Options: Turn OFF – “Capitalize first letter of every sentence.”

Setting a Folder as a Trusted Source for Running Macros

Normally, Writer will warn you about any file that you try to open if it contains any macro code. This warning screen can become quite tiresome, especially for your own chess documents. But you can choose to have the folder in which you keep these files declared as a Trusted Source for running documents that contain macros. In that case, you won't have to look at the security warning splash screen every time you open a document. To do this, click on:

Tools → Options → OpenOffice.org → Security

Click the Macro Security button. Click the Trusted Sources Tab. Click on the Add button that appears near the bottom of the dialog. In the dialog that pops up,select the folder that you wish to declare as your Trusted Source. Click OK.

Beware! Never place any documents in your Trusted Source folder that you are not absolutely certain about. A macro from an unknown source could be used to delete all the files from your hard drive.

All of this is covered in the manual. To get a copy, just go to the Introductory post:
