The Files You'll Need to Get Started with OoChess

Yesterday I posted an introduction to the OoChess template along with a link to the manual so that anyone interested could download it and see if it might be of any use to them. Today I'm going to post the links to the files that you'll need to begin working with OoChess.

The OoChess Templates

First You'll Need a Chess Font or Two

There are two templates, depending upon which chess fonts you decide to use. The Alpine template supports the three Alpine chess fonts: Linares, Hastings and Zurich. If you have any of these fonts, then you can begin to use the Alpine template straight away. If you don't have any of them, then you can either go to the Alpine site and buy one or more of them, or download the Marroquin template and get any of the chess fonts created by Armando Marroquin to use with that template.

To get the Alpine chess fonts go here:

http://www.partae.com/fonts/products/products.php

The get any of the Marroquin chess fonts, all of which are free, go to Eric Bentzen's excellent chess publishing site:

Don't forget to download Armando's special chess figurines and symbols fonts. You'll need these to work with the OoChess Marroquin Template. These three fonts are called: FigurineSymbolT1 to FigurineSymbolT3.

The Special OoChess Folder Contents

The OoChess templates can be placed anywhere you want on your computer to work with them. However, there is a very special folder, named OoChess, that contains critical files used by the templates. This folder contains a number of small image files used for icons and dialogs, a  helper program, also called OoChess, and a special file that contains ECO opening keys that are used to classify the opening of games that you choose to insert into your document. (There will be more on this topic later.) All the files and sub-folders that are contained within the OoChess folder are in this single ZIP file:

http://1drv.ms/1x2eE86

This ZIP file is called: OOChess Folder Contents.zip

Creating the Special OoChess Folder

You must have the files and sub-folders within this ZIP file installed int he special OoChess folder in order to get the templates to work properly. Before you can copy the ZIPped files into the OoChess folder, you must first create it. For most systems, you need to create the OoChess folder off of the Public folder. You would go to the Public folder here:

C:\Users\Public

You would then create the OoChess folder inside the Public folder. You should end up with:

C:\Users\Public\OoChess

If you do not have a folder named Public at C:\Users, then you'll likely have a folder named:

C:\Users\Shared

If that is the case, then create your OoChes folder there, so that you end up with:

C:\Users\Shared\OoChess

Once you have created the special OoChess folder, open up the OOChess Folder Contents.zip file, select all the files, including the three folders, and copy all the contents into the OoChess folder that you created.

Don't Forget the OpenOffice Suite

As the OoChess templates are OpenOffice templates, it goes without saying that you'll also need to get and install the OpenOffice suite, or at least the Writer part of it. You can get OpenOffice from here:

The OoChess Manual

I posted a link to the manual yesterday, but it seems like a good idea to repost it again so that anyone who wants it can get a copy for themselves.

When you click on the above link, the manual will be displayed. Just below the top left corner, just below Word Online, you'll see the DOWNLOAD button. Click on this to to download a copy of the manual for yourself.

That's all for today. Tomorrow we'll discuss how to set up Writer to best work with the OoChess templates and how to begin an actual OoChess document.

  1. Hi
Thanks for the terrific template. Unfortunately the link given for the Special Contents Folder.zip only brings up the Alapine template, so I can't get anything to work!

    Regards

    Ken

  2. Ouch! You are absolutely right, Ken, I copied the wrong link for the special folder. I have update the post above to include the correct links and I've tested it to make sure that it does indeed go to the special folder. I hope you'll give it another try. Thanks for bringing this to may attention.

    The correct link is: http://1drv.ms/1x2eE86

    1. Hello Pedro,

I'm sorry that you're have trouble with the template. Perhaps you could send me a copy of the file that you are working on that contains the moves that you are trying to play out? If you could also tell me where you are trying to place the cursor fro the diagram insertion that would be useful as well. (See the Contact Information page to see how to send along the file to me. ) Thanks!

    2. Hello,
This looks fantastic and exactly the thing I was looking for. Already a big thanks. Sadly I get the same error, whatever way I try to make a diagram.
      Kind regards,
      Carlos
